This book explains the British Army's post-WWI quest for a service revolver that would be easier for hastily-trained wartime recruits to master than the massive .455 Webley. After Webley offered a sample revolver based on the .38 S&W cartridge that was in widespread use by US police departments, the British Army had noted armaments expert Captain Boys redesign the Webley for ease of production. . .and then adopted his redesign as the Enfield. The book gives tantalizing hints about the British Army's assessments of the effectiveness of the ".380/200" cartridge, aka .380 Mk. 1 with 200 grain lead bullet, and the subsequent Mk. 2 with a 178g jacketed bullet. The authors focus their efforts, however, on detailing the development, adoption and production of the revolver itself, as the title implies. In a compact book, they provide an encyclopedic treatment of every variant and its specifications during a service life that lasted through the 1960s in British service, and well beyond that in places like India, South Africa and Singapore.
