Native Central American Wounaan Figural Woven Seed Basket Purse.
This fabulous facial effigy basket is from the Panamanian Wounaan tribe of the Darien' rain forest. The front of this basket is a full face with well proportioned raised nose, woven mouth opening, eyes and eyebrows. There is a colorful diamond geometric pattern on the sides in yellow, gray, black, tan and rust which extends around the back to an oval opening. This opening into the interior of the basket has a woven net like flap closure, secured at the top by a button and loop clasp. A long fiber braided shoulder strap is attached at the top and bottom. The basket is constructed from wild palm leaves, structurally firm, exquisitely designed and executed. Truly unique. Measures 5 1/2 x 4 x 3 inches.
