OLD 1956 RHEINGOLD BEER ADVERTISING TRAY ~ BROOKLYN NY ~ COOL & CLEAN! LOOK!
This week on Ebay we are offering up this very cool old Rheingold Beer advertising tray from my home town of Brooklyn, New York.
The tray is the typical approximately
12” size with a 1 ¼” lip.
Condition is quite nice for a tray over 60 years old. No significant damage or major blemishes.
Some light early ‘rusting’ and ageing is noted but it displays great and has terrific character. The underside is bright red and clean with no major scratches or dings. I tried to give high resolution photos of all angles of the tray so you can see its nice condition. I gave detailed photos of the ‘worst’ spots, but they’re actually not bad at all. I gently washed the tray off with soap and water but did not try to address any of the wear that the tray may have. I’ll leave that up to the winning bidder.
Please look at all the pictures. They are part of the description and show the condition and details better than I can explain with words.
Overall, the tray looks great and displays great.
It’s a very nice piece to add to your collection.

Rheingold Beer was a very popular brew in the New York City area.
The Rheingold Brewery at Forest and Bremen Streets in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn was owned by the Liebmann Family who emigrated from Germany in the 1880s.
Anyone who grew up in the New York metropolitan area in the 50s or 60s surely remembers Rheingold and its famous Miss Rheingold contests held every year. Beer drinkers voted each year on which young lady who would be featured as Miss Rheingold in advertisements. Miss Rheingold was a true city celebrity. The first Miss Rheingold was cute, Spanish-born Jinx Falkenburg, a model and actress.
Rheingold was popular with both the average blue-collar working man as well as the city’s minority communities. Rheingold were one of the first brewers to support black TV shows and had black celebrities as spokespersons. Rheingold was also the official beer of the New York Mets.
Rheingold was marketed for years as ‘The Dry Beer’. Their jingle went: ‘not bitter, not sweet, it’s a dry flavored treat’.
At its peak, Rheingold was huge and had almost 35% of the New York Metro beer market sales. The original owners, the Liebmann famly sold the brewery in 1963.
For thirty years, Rheingold Beer reigned supreme in the New York area, but by 1976, as a local brewery, it could no longer compete with nationwide companies such as Anheuser & Busch, Miller, and Schlitz, and its doors were closed.
Today, the brewery site in Brooklyn is an apartment complex.

This is a very cool 1950s Rheingold beer tray that would look great in your collection or Man-cave. A great example of mid-Century Modern advertising design that is becoming all the rage for interior designers now. Vintage beer tray advertising art has suddenly become cool again.
Rheingold beer collectibles are relatively easy to date. The red and white advertising was used for several decades and their trays from the early 1950s onward all looked similar, but at the bottom, they were indirectly dated.
The brewery opened in 1837 and their advertising often stated “Brewers for over XX Years” making it easy to date. Liebmann sold out in 1963, so anything with that brewer is pre-1963. Anything with an Orange, NJ location is post 1963.
This tray states ‘Brewers for over 119 Years’, which dates it to around 1956.
I think the tray looks terrific. It has authenticity and character and displays great. A cool piece of ‘old’ New York.
