Vintage MOLA Kuna Indians San Blas/Panama Textile Art - Bird Image
Mola can mean blouse and is used for daily wear for the Kuna (or Cuna) women. The Kuna people are from the San Blas Islands of Panama. While the word mola means blouse, these pieces are a panel of the blouse that are brilliantly colored and designed. The first designs were based off the body paintings that had been a tradition for centuries.
A main concept in Molas is to leave as little unworked space as possible because it is believed that evil spirits can settle in free spaces. Many of the molas have repetitive designs with distinct meanings. For example, small applied triangles symbolize the shape of the bamboo huts that many Kuna call home and vertical slots designs imitate the sun beams shining through their bamboo walls. These symbolize family and protection. Many labyrinths and zig zag lines are found on Molas, these are used so evil spirits can get lost and keep those wearing them safe.
Mola is in good condition with no significant damage. No rips, tears, or pulled thread. Very colorful. Includes colors like orange, pink, yellow, blue, green, black, and purple. Image is of a bird holding a flower. Originally bought in the 1990s.
